Giants Scouring the Bargain Bin for Offensive Line Help

The New York Giants’ offensive line has long been a source of frustration. Last season, when Andrew Thomas suffered a Lisfranc injury and was lost for the year, the unit collapsed under the weight of inexperience and inconsistency. The result? A disastrous 3-14 record that left fans and analysts alike questioning the team’s future.

With Thomas now back, there’s hope that the Giants can rebuild their offensive identity. But it’s not just about his return — the rest of the line needs to step up as well. Players like Joshua Ezeudu, Jermaine Eluemunor, center John Michael Schmitz, and guards Jon Runyan, Jr. and Greg Van Roten are all expected to contribute, but many are still unproven at the NFL level.

A Last Chance for Evan Neal

One player getting another shot is Evan Neal, the former first-round pick who struggled at right tackle. Now moved inside to guard, the Giants are hoping this change will help him find his footing. If he can improve his footwork and reaction time, he might even challenge Van Roten for a starting spot.

But even with Neal’s potential, the line remains a question mark. Enter Marcus Mbow, the fifth-round draft pick who’s expected to be a future contributor. However, most believe he’ll take time to develop and may not make an immediate impact this season.

Russell Wilson’s Mobility as a Silver Lining

Despite the uncertainty, the Giants have a mobile quarterback in Russell Wilson. His ability to escape pressure could provide some relief for an underperforming offensive line. But even Wilson can’t do it alone, especially if the line continues to struggle.

Brandon Scherff: A Possible Solution?

With the line looking shaky, rumors have started to swirl about a possible move to add a veteran presence. Brandon Austin of Pro Football Sports Network suggested the Giants look into free-agent guard Brandon Scherff, a former five-time Pro Bowler who recently played for the Jaguars.

Scherff, 33, had a solid 2023 season, allowing zero sacks in 592 snaps. If he still has the passion and energy to play, adding him could give the Giants a much-needed boost. Plus, he’d fit within the salary cap, making him a viable option.

The Pressure on Daboll and Schoen

If the Giants don’t land Scherff or find another solution, the pressure on head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen will only grow. Fans are already restless, and another poor season from the offensive line could lead to more criticism and speculation about the front office’s decisions.
